#20 Muar, Johor

Image
District: Muar , Johor Towns in the district: Muar Town , Parit Jawa , Bukit Pasir , Sungai Mati Last time I was there: We basically make a trip almost every quarter!  The story: Muar -- or “Muo,” as the locals affectionately call it -- is always worth the two-hour drive. The main draw? Food, of course. From morning sate to soto,  lontong , mee bandung, asam pedas , and the local kopi , it’s a culinary marathon that never disappoints. We’ve even done overnight trips, enjoying night strolls at Dataran Tanjung Emas , mingling with cheerful locals. Beyond the food, it’s a great spot to pick up early baju Raya or Islamic books . Muar’s charm is in its people, flavours, and that unmistakable small-town warmth -- truly one of the best!

#19 Perak Tengah, Perak

District : Perak Tengah , Perak Towns in the district:   Bandar Seri Iskandar , Bota Kanan, Kampong Buloh Akar, Kota Setia, Parit, Tanjong Belanja Last time I was there: October, 2011 The story: Back in October 2011, during my time with Malaysia Hari Ini , we did a live on-location broadcast at Universiti Teknologi Petronas in Seri Iskandar , Perak -- and it remains one of the most memorable assignments of my TV days. The three-hour drive from Sri Pentas felt like a small adventure. When we arrived, the campus surprised me. Modern, bold, and beautifully planned -- a far cry from what you’d expect in a quiet town. The Kompleks Canselor , designed by Foster + Partners , stood proudly at the heart of it all. But the real gem was the Information Resource Centre . Standing inside it for the first time, I remember thinking -- this doesn’t feel like Malaysia. It felt world-class. We went on air the day after at 6.30am as usual. By sunrise, the campus was alive with convocation partici...

#18 Temerloh, Pahang

District: Temerloh, Pahang Towns in the district:   Temerloh Town , Mentakab , Lanchang , Kerdau, Kuala Krau Last time I was there: February 2025 The story: As they say, when you’re in Temerloh, you must visit the record-breaking pekan sehari ! Our first visit was in 2020 (just before the pandemic), and we’ve been returning almost every year since. We love the lively vibe, friendly folks -- and especially the food prices! The random karaoke singers can be a bit of a mood killer though, haha. No trip is complete without Ikan Patin Masak Tempoyak  -- our go-to spot is Kancil Raja Patin , where I personally love the pais .  On one of our trips, we also discovered Titik Tengah Semenanjung in Kampung Paya Siput , Lanchang -- the official midpoint of Peninsular Malaysia. It’s a scenic open area with photo spots and a tilted monument symbolising the five pillars of Islam , best visited with an umbrella in hand, just in case!

#17 Kuala Selangor, Selangor

District: Kuala Selangor , Selangor Towns in the district:  Api-Api, Bestari Jaya, Ujong Permatang, Hulu Tinggi, Ijok, Jeram, Kuala Selangor, Pasangan, Tanjung Karang Last time I was there:  February 2025 The story: Mention Kuala Selangor and most people think of fireflies or Sky Mirror . But even without boats or tidal timing, it’s still a great land-based family day trip. Just 80 km from Bukit Jalil, the 90-minute drive slowly swaps city bustle for small-town coastal calm. Our first stop is usually Warung Dimyati Roti Canai Pelangi in Kampung Sungai Yu . Since 2018, its colourful roti canai has been the star -- but it’s the taste that matters: soft inside, slightly crisp outside, and dangerously easy to order “one more.” Kuala Selangor is also one of Selangor’s oldest historical towns, once the first administrative capital of the Sultanate. Bukit Melawati is the highlight, with its old fort and royal history tied to the Selangor Civil War . A tram ride takes you up to p...
