#24 Kuala Terengganu, Terengganu

Image
District: Kuala Terengganu , Terengganu Towns in the district:  Kuala Terengganu City, Kuala Nerus, Batu Rakit, Seberang Takir and Gong Badak Last time I was there: 2015 The story: Interestingly, about 90% of the time I’m in Kuala Terengganu, it’s for work. The one time I actually went there for a proper family getaway was back in 2011. And in classic fashion... I booked the trip without checking the dates properly -- and we ended up arriving right in the middle of Ramadan . Haha. So yes, activities were a bit limited… but all things considered, we still had a pretty decent time. We stayed at the Ri-Yaz Heritage Resort & Spa -- also known as the “Home of the Monsoon Cup ,” since this is where the sailing teams usually stay. From the lobby, you get a clear view of Kuala Terengganu town... including its own little version of i-City lighting up the night. The next day, we made a beeline for the ever-famous Pasar Payang -- and as expected, we didn’t hold back. Kain, keropok... ...

#23 Kuching, Sarawak

Image
Division:   Kuching, Sarawak Towns in the division: Kuching, Bau, Lundu, Padawan and Sematan Last time I was there: May, 2024  The story: The first time I set foot in Bumi Kenyalang was back in 1996. I had just received my offer letter to join the Judicial and Legal Service -- a big moment, of course. But tucked inside that good news was another instruction: pack your bags and report to Kuching, Sarawak. Just like that… life took a turn. Even though it was my first time in Sarawak, it didn’t feel completely foreign. Since my matriculation days, I’d been close friends with a bunch of Sarawakian boys -- so the language, the culture… not entirely new to me. In Kuching, I stayed with my good friend from UIA, Ben, and his family in Batu Kawa . My office was at the old court complex right in the middle of town -- proper old-school setting. Food-wise, I was introduced very quickly to what makes Kuching… Kuching. Places like Sugar Bun -- yes, that Sugar Bun -- which, believe it o...

#22 Port Dickson, Negeri Sembilan

Image
District: Port Dickson, Negeri Sembilan Towns in the district:  Port Dickson town, Teluk Kemang, Lukut, Pasir Panjang, Pengkalan Kempas, Chuah, Bukit Pelanduk, Linggi and others Last time I was there: September, 2025 The story: The year before the pandemic, we did something a little spontaneous -- we became part-time residents of Port Dickson. It started as one of those “eh, maybe when we retire…” conversations. You know… slow mornings, sea breeze, small-town life. So we thought, why wait? I rented a small apartment with a partial sea view at a pretty reasonable price -- nothing fancy, but waking up to that hint of blue on the horizon every day? Totally worth it. Most Fridays after work, we’d drive down from KL at night, windows down, weekend mode already switched on. And because we weren’t just tourists rushing in and out, we got to experience PD differently. We explored the quieter corners. Ate at random warungs only locals knew about. Found hidden coffee spots. And honestly? Tho...

#21 Melaka Tengah, Melaka

Image
District: Melaka Tengah, Melaka Towns in the district: Bukit Baru, Bandar Melaka, Ayer Molek, Batu Berendam, Bukit Rambai, Kandang Klebang & others Last time I was there: It's my wife's kampung! The story: Ah, Melaka. So near, yet so infamous for its traffic lights. Whenever we crave a quick getaway from KL , we’d usually drive straight past it to Muar -- yes, even though Melaka is my wife’s kampung. But one weekday in 2023, our hati suddenly terbuka. It was the state holiday ( Governor’s Birthday ), and we thought -- why not chase some asam pedas and history? The drive down was smooth. And miracle of miracles -- from Simpang Ampat onwards, the traffic lights were perfectly timed. Green after green. A rare Melaka blessing. Breakfast was at Faizal Mohd Yusof Roti Canai Special in Limbongan -- roti canai with kari kambing and kari ikan siakap (plus sotong). Solid start. Alhamdulillah. In town, traffic was surprisingly kind. We parked near Jonker Walk , strolled around,...
